President's Message

Welcome to the CAVA-ACAV website.

CAVA-ACAV evolved from a small group of dedicated victims and advocates who in 2003 recognized the need for a national association of victims, service providers and justice professionals to facilitate a dialogue about victim needs, services and their role in the criminal justice system.

We came together to share our experiences and create opportunities for learning. The first inaugural symposium was held in Vancouver, British Columbia 2004. Positive evaluations and feedback confirmed the interest and need for these symposiums to continue. The second forum took place in Mississauga, Ontario in 2006.

Our group remains small but dedicated to those impacted by crime and trauma or those serving victims. We acknowledge the lack of resources, and funds for travel and training are restricted or limited. This year we have agreed to focus on effective ways to connect with our membership virtually. We believe using technology to connect and integrate our membership nationally has tremendous benefits for everyone. We are attempting to secure stories and content for webinars that provide opportunities for education, communication and networking amongst our membership.

We enter 2012 with the hope of bringing renewed energy while maintaining the spirit that brought us together initially. The need remains for a national voice that unites and advocates for victims and those in the field of serving victims of crime & trauma in Canada. We welcome new members as well as those interested in joining the board.

Despite our failed attempts at gaining optimal momentum we encourage and welcome you to be part of a national association dedicated to serving those in need of support and services.

Several board members including myself will be present at the 2012 National Crime Victims Awareness week launch in Ottawa. If you plan on attending please seek us out and say hello.
